ZAMBIA
Return to Africa

FOREWORD:
Zambia had been closed to hunting in 2001, but much of
it has recently re-opened in 2003. There are currently however, still open
issues to deal with in that country, including legal proceedings which affect
five of the countries premier hunting areas, namely Mumbwa, Nyampala, Mwanya,
Chifunda and Upper Lupande. Another area in turmoil over the hunting is
Sichifulo and we think that area will be a problem for at least another year. It
is important, if you are considering this fine country for a Safari, that you
first contact us for up to date information. In terms of the country itself,
Zambia is bounded on the north by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which
nearly cuts Zambia in half by its border. It is bounded easterly by Tanzania,
Malawi and Mozambique; southerly by Zimbabwe and Botswana and Westerly by
Angola. It was formerly known as Northern Rhodesia and was under the dominion
and control of the South Africa Company from 1891 until 1923 when Britain itself
took it over. It became Zambia upon its independence in 1964. In the 1980s and
90s declining copper prices and a huge prolonged drought hurt the economy which
is still recovering. Since 1991 there has been multi-party rule marred by
contentious elections and voter harassment. In terms of size it is slightly
larger than Texas. It is a landlocked country with no coastal areas. About 1/3rd
of the country consists of National Parks and Game Management Areas. It has two
river valleys; Kalahari bushveld to the southwest; woodland plateaus in the
interior and extensive swamps and floodplains. Prime hunting areas include the famed Kafue; the Luangwa Valley and
the swamplands of Bangweulu. The Zambezi River forms the border with Zimbabwe.
The country is 98% African, with a small European population. There are over 70
tribal tongues spoken, although English is the official language. Surprisingly
about 75% of the adult population can read and write English. The primary
money unit is the Zambian kwacha, which usually trades in the vicinity of 4,000
kwacha per US dollar. In summary, Zambia is a wonderful country to hunt,
and it appears the problems of the last several years are being resolved, so
there is reason for cautious optimism. Indeed, it is in the countrys own
interests to get the flow of US funds resumed into the country.
HUNT #73 ZAMBIA
(Also Hunts
South Africa and
Zimbabwe)
This Safari company was fortunate in
getting allocated one of Zambia's premier safari areas. The allocation
consists of two safari areas adjacent to and bordering the world famous Kafue
flats. The "Flats" are world renown for their abundance and diversity of
species. These two huge safari areas hold the big four, (elephant
excluded). The big cat hunting, and the lion in particular is superb.
One of our best clients, Dave C., hunted this area in 2003, taking lion,
leopard, buff, sable and many other species. Dave, who has hunted all over
the globe, pronounced it to be perhaps "my finest hunt ever, certainly my best
African experience!" High praise from this very experienced client.
We also like this outfit for their bow hunting expertise with both dangerous
game and plains game. They have helped take most of the Big 5 with bow,
including lion and buff. They also run a separate concession in South
Africa for bow hunting ONLY! They know archery!

Cape Buffalo with Bow!
Since these Zambia concessions have become
available from the government, the result is that vast areas have gone
unexplored, unhunted -- and the potential is beyond belief. These are some
absolutely huge black maned lions here, some superb sable, big leopard and
excellent buffalo. If you want to see what real and wild Africa was in the
"Good Old Days", than you certainly want to hunt these concessions within the
next 5 to 8 years!

Leopard
Based out of Nsonga, Zambia, these game
management areas are easily accessed via charter flights out of either
Livingstone or Lusaka. From the airstrip where you land in Ngoma, you need
travel only around 10 kilometers to get to base camp. Camp by the way is
the classic Old Africa tented camp, with full facilities, an excellent staff and
an abundance of good food and drink. Also please note that observers are
welcomed for only $200/day!! Lastly be aware that here you can do a 14 day
hunt for lion - whereas often in Africa 21 days is minimum.

Big Roan
The Kafue Flats has many species not
often found elsewhere, such as the gorgeous Kafue Lechwe, one of the most
attractive of all the plains antelope. Also available is Licthenstein
Hartebeest, Livingstone Eland, Sable, Roan, Sharpes Grysbuck and others.
Here too is the Defassa Waterbuck. This PH, has proven to be superlative
in all aspects and he is a very capable gent, indeed, and he is hunting some of
the world's finest game country! An excellent combination of talent and
circumstance.
