TANZANIA
Return to Africa

FOREWORD:
Tanzania is certainly a premier safari country,
and as such it commands premier prices. It has proven very stable and safe. It
comes the closest in terms of actuality and mystique to the old East African and
Kenyan Safaris which were made legendary by people such as Robert Ruark and
Ernest Hemingway. Daily fees are among the highest in Africa, but trophy fees are
quite low, and for example multiple buffalo can often be had, depending on
length of safari. In terms of buffalo size, the primary African countries do not
vary greatly in size, with 40 plus being taken in most of them. However, one of
our PHs in 2001 took a 50 and a 48, which is exceptional. If you can afford
it, Tanzania is the closest thing to the old Kenyan safaris. Indeed much of the
interior is virtually unpopulated, insuring good hunting. Also of note, is that
many unique species can be found here, including Grants and Thompson gazelles,
lesser Kudu, sitatunga, gerenuk, suni, Roosevelts sable and Roberts gazelle.
You should also be aware that you must specify all animals to be put on license
for you- no on the spot decisions here. For dangerous game the venerable old
.375 is the minimum. Plains game requires a medium cartridge. You may import up
to 200 cartridges.
The country is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the
North, Westerly by Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo;
Southerly by Zambia and Mozambique and easterly by the Indian Ocean. After
independence, Tanganyika and the island of Zanzibar merged to form Tanzania in
1964. The first democratic multi-party elections were held in 1995 after 25
years without. Zanzibar continues to agitate for autonomy and the elections are
replete with scandals. In size, the country is about twice the size of
California. In terms of climate, it varies from tropical along its 1400 KM of
coast line, to temperate in the highlands. It is generally pleasant with a
distinct rainy season somewhere between late March and early June, and again in
Mid-November into December. Most of the remainder of the year is very dry. Due
to elevations, mornings and evenings tend to be cool (50-65 degrees) and days
often reach into mid-80s. It really is a country of three parts, with the
coastal plains, the central plateau and the highlands of the northern and
southern regions. Mount Kilimanjaro is the legendary mountain and is the highest
point in all of Africa. It is bordered by three of the largest lakes in the
world, including Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyasa. If you have the time,
you should also consider touring the famed Serengeti Park or one of Tanzanias
other fine parks. In terms of population, over 95% of the country is of the
Bantu tribe with its 130 sub-tribes. Swahili is the language of the Bantu, and
English is the official language for trade purposes. Less than 5% of the country
is European and other nationalities. The capital city is Dar es Salaam. Tanzania
is one of the poorest countries in the world today. It is heavily dependent on
its agriculture for an economy, although precious metals, timber and minerals
are a factor. The primary currency is the Tanzanian shilling which currently
trades at between 800 to 1000 shillings per US dollar! Incidentally, we strongly
suggest purchasing travel insurance from us on any African or international
trip. Costs vary, but average around 4% to 6% of the trip, depending on coverage
selected. Ask us for the information.
HUNT # 81:TANZANIA

Hunts with this particular safari company are strictly
conducted in the old traditional East African fashion, with luxury tented camps,
skilled Professional Hunters, and a conglomeration of trackers, skinners,
waiters and bush chefs. The safari company prides itself on uncompromising
quality. Good food, a selection of wines, ice cold drinks, hors doeuvres around
the fire-the whole nine yards! One thing that distinguishes this company is
its single minded dedication to perfection. For example, they actually have
training grounds and conduct regular training sessions in the off-season! They
employ carpenters, tent repair people and insure that camps are all of the
highest quality. Their hunting vehicles have refrigerators and short wave radios
so they can contact camp or the headquarters. In terms of game itself, their
areas contain a vast variety and quantity of species. They hunt the Selous,
Monduli, Kizigo,Ugalla, Kigosi and Maswa areas. You have seen Tony Makris
on Wild Shies hunting here. They have nearly a dozen PH's, many of whom
are famous in their own right. The Maswa area borders the
Serengeti Park and has the huge wildebeest migrations seen on TV. The Monduli is
located in Masailand with spectacular highland forest and plains falling into
the Rift Valley. Ugalla, is adjacent to the non-huntable Ugalla Game Reserve and
is similar to the Okavango in Botswana. Kizigo is in central Tanzania and is
part of the Ruaha National park. This is prime woodland for sable, kudu, eland
and roan., plus big cats. They hunt from June 1st until the end of
December. One big plus with this safari company is they do not consider your
first day of travel to the camp, or your last day in leaving, as hunt days. You
are not charged for those two travel days! Given the daily rates, this is an
important savings of several thousand dollars. To reach them and your camp, you
fly to Dar es Salaam or Nairobi. Then you take a charter flight to Arusha.
Charter flights are not included in pricing and vary with number of people and
location. In terms of medical needs, you are required to have yellow fever and
malaria immunizations. It is also common for your doctor to suggest as a safety
precaution that you get vaccinated for cholera, typhoid and tetanus. Consult
your physician at least 60 to 90 days before leaving. Also, be aware that
non-hunting companions are absolutely prohibited by law from shooting animals on
your license. They may however upgrade to either a full hunt, or if they are
looking for the best deal- they should upgrade to a COMPANION HUNT. Companion
hunt rates are listed below, and involve substantial savings. Companion hunts
can only be booked on 1X1, 2X2 or 3X3 hunts, and it allows two clients to share
the game set on the license for one hunting client. You hunt 2X1. Both hunters
will have licenses, so game can be exported. Trophy fees and air transfers are
extra in all cases. IF you want to hunt with one of Tanzania'a
premier safari companies -- this is it. Call us for full information.
