                                          SOUTH AFRICA:

Return to Africa

FOREWORD:

South Africa is the most popular and most visited country in Africa today. It is the country where most hunters have their first African experiences. Safari pricing is in the low to moderate range for most plains game, (high range for dangerous game) and the camp amenities can be quite plush, and at the least, more than adequate. Booking through a well established agent will  insure that you avoid some of the bad operators that have started to creep into their Safari industry.  South Africa has literally hundreds and hundreds of operations and concessions, and certainly they are not all created equal! A typical quality operation will have well developed routines, quality PHs and staff, excellent to superb cuisine, good vehicles, excellent lodging, deluxe outdoor cooking facilities with excellent wet bars, plus daily laundry service and plenty of camp helpers including trackers and skinners. In terms of the country itself, its history is tied in many ways to the British seizure of the Cape of Good Hope in 1806. This forced many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers), to push northward into the interior of Africa to found their own colonies and republics. This trek into the wilds, has remarkable parallels to our own American history of moving west. In both countries settlers endured incredible hardships, faced massacres and warfare with the natives, founded towns, discovered gold and valuable minerals, and forged the beginnings of many of the great landholdings and ranches still existing today. Starting about 1990, apartheid ended and today black majority rule controls. There is a president, elected every 5 years by the National Assembly. In size the country is twice that of Texas, and it has a population of approximately 44 million people. It is divided into 9 provinces, with the better known provinces including the Free State, the East Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga.  The capital is Pretoria, although Johannesburg is the best known of its cities. The country labors under 11 official languages, including English and Afrikaans. The general climate is semi-arid, with sunny days and cool nights. It also has sub-topical areas along its east coast. Most of the interior is a high plateau rimmed with rugged hills. It is a mix of people and cultures. It has a good infra structure, is modern in many ways, but also suffers with some abject poverty. Hunters should be aware that most hunting concessions have been forced to fence their areas to avoid massive human predation of the game populations. However, that fencing has saved many native species and has resulted in vast and varied game populations, which are carefully and scientifically managed. A good concession with sufficient acreage will furnish you with excellent challenges and the sighting of plentiful game. Based on first hand experience we can assure you that the game has all of its normal wariness and its survival senses have been finely honed over the years by successive generations of hunters. Without the fencing many of the species would have been virtually exterminated years ago. Instead, you will be privileged to experience the joy of seeing vast land areas populated with unbelievable numbers of game, assuming you hunt a quality concession. If time permits we strongly recommend that before your safari, you tour one of the fine national parks, especially Kruger. It is not expensive, and will give you a good sense of what the animals look like, how they act, and what constitutes a trophy. You will take home hundreds of photos and your entire family or group will thoroughly enjoy the experience. You will then be fully prepared for your safari. We can assist you with these arrangements also. Listed below are the safari operators who we prefer.

HUNT # 57 : SOUTH AFRICA

This South African PH and Safari operator has become a trusted friend of Butchs, and has been to our headquarters in Cheyenne. He has sat down with Butch and worked out some very special pricing for our clients, but more importantly, he is a superb PH and an even better gentleman. If you hunt with him, you will leave Africa feeling you left a very good friend behind! Every client we have sent him sings his praises. He is willing, pleasant, goes far out of his way to insure you have a grand experience, and he is an absolutely superb rifle shot to boot. He also caters to families, including making special arrangements to keep non-hunters happy with sight-seeing and similar adventures. We have personally hunted with him, and think very highly of his entire operation, which just gets better every year. Recently he was instrumental in setting up the African One-Shot program, whereby teams of hunters are put afield and you are allowed a single shot to down your springbuck. There are various prizes, various events, dinners, and the proceeds all go to a charity to buy shoes for African children as well as food for them. And if you do that competition, we can arrange for it to lead you into a hunt immediately afterwards. You will meet some wonderful people, and then complete your safari. Ask for details. Of course you can simply do his normal hunts as well. Either way, you can be assured of a superior experience. This PH has a variety of concessions all over South Africa, from the Free State to the East Cape, from the lowveld to the bushveld, from Zululand to the border of Zimbabwe. Each concession offers its own virtues. One concession in 2002 produced 3 kudu over 60!  His base concession is called Lebensraum.  It is an incredible facility - huge game room, great mounts, outdoor lapa, wild antelope in the front yard!  And this concession has two of the Big Five Cape Buffalo and Rhino!  That alone makes it unique.  Most South Africa safari areas have only plains game - none of the dangerous game.  We think seeing these other two critters will add greatly to your enjoyment!  You will also see giraffes here as well.  The result is a total experience.

Our Client Jim W. with Kudu

Normally 90% or more of the animals harvested will make SCI book. He has taken several number ones as well.  Each concession has deluxe accommodations, excellent cuisine and many creature comforts in addition to excellent game populations. Where you fly into South Africa will depend on the concession or concessions you choose to hunt. Pricing also varies slightly from concession to concession. We have listed several packages he created for our clients, as well as his daily rate and some sample trophy fees. Again actual costs will vary a bit depending on the concessions selected. Also we can customize any selection of animals into a package, thereby usually saving you some money, should you so wish. Even if you select a package, you can still add on animals at your leisure at the trophy fee rates for the concession.  He is also an archer, and welcomes archers to his facilities. Call us to arrange for any archery package.

DAILY RATE: The daily rate for plains game is $375 for a 1 on 1 hunt. For a two hunter per PH hunt the price is $275 per day. Non-hunters are $150. For dangerous game, $550.  ARCHERY 3x1 is $150/day.

HUNT # 13: SOUTH AFRICA

Ron W's impala - note terrain

This hunt takes place on the East Cape of South Africa. We were told some wonderous stories about this place by some clients and put together an inspection hunt along with several of our clients. When they left, the PH called Butch and said he was glad they left while there was still some game left in Africa! Our consultant, Bill and the two clients had an incredible hunt. Butch's client Chris C., took what looks like the new #4 SCI bushbuck. Truly exceptional impala from 25 to nearly 27 were taken; a nice caracal cat was harvested with a bow over some dogs; they were 100% on East Cape Kudu; took some excellent black and blue wildebeests; springbuck; Gemsbuck to 40-the list goes on and on. This area has a mix of rocky and mountainous areas interspersed with thorn brush valleys and open grassy plains. The hunt takes place near Port Elizabeth and the area offers all the species the East Cape is known for. Normally your hunt here is spot and stalk. You stay in a comfortable African ranch style home with your own private room and bath. A comfortable outside lapa area (campfire area) to sit and swap tales and sip drinks; a large garden and swimming pool, all surrounded by mountains. Food was outstanding, and one of the guys gained 10 pounds in 7 days! Great salads, huge desserts. The PH's wife will take non-hunting spouses for interesting side trips  to Port Elizabeth and to various scenic and game viewing areas as well. This outfit is 100% on their kudu, and other PH's come from all over to hunt their huge impala. This is a true hunt in every sense and they take some awesome bushbucks!

HUNT #73:SOUTH AFRICA -

EXCLUSIVE BOW HUNT AREA!

This excellent Professional Hunter runs dangerous game and plains game hunts in Zambia, and also has superb plains game hunts in several areas of South Africa.  One  of his South Africa areas in HIS OWN EXCLUSIVE bow only hunting concession-no gun hunting allowed!  Now on top of that, add to the formula, the fact that this outfit has guided clients successfully on dangerous game like lions and buffalo!  So you have experienced archery guides, and an area where only archery is allowed.  Now add to that very reasonable pricing, and top it off with superb lodge (pool, open veranda and bar, suite rooms with batch).  If a bowhunter cannot be happy here- there is no help for him (or her)!  They will hunt you spot and stalk, or from ground blinds carefully placed; from tree stands or from pit blinds in some cases!  Now just wait for that trophy Kudu - or maybe Gemsbuck - or -----!!

We also like the fact that if you are doing your first African bow safari, and assuming you are pleased (you will be!) - then when you decide to try for additional game or dangerous game, we can again hook you up with the same PH for that as well!  His Zambia concession is superb for buffalo, black maned lion, leopard - the whole bit!  Elephant and rhino too, but that takes a bit of pre-planning for an archer.  Please note that our packages generally include one or more of the expensive animals such as kudu and gemsbuck, plus a good deal of medium priced game like blesbok, impala, springbuck and warthog.  Many packages are long on cheap species and chintz on the medium of higher priced species.  Also, we can customize any package - add or subtract animals - add or subtract days - we wrk with you to get you just what you need.

HUNT # 166:SOUTH AFRICA

We have recently been fortunate to reach an agreement to market Plains Game Safaris and dangerous game hunts for a group of South African landowners. The advantage we have gotten from this arrangement is a cheaper price structure due to consolidating efforts and equipment. We have a very respected African Professional Hunter (a nominee for SCI PH of the year), who has put together a team of 6 professionals to conduct these hunts. Hunts are located in various parts of South Africa including the East Cape, The North Cape, Natal and the Transvaal. To give you an idea of the quality, Kudu have been averaging 55; Eland averaged 36; Nyala 28; and Sable 39. Success has been nearly 100% on SCI record book quality animals. Although lodging and facilities vary from concession to concession, all camps are excellent and some even have their own swimming pools. Daily laundry and excellent cuisine is standard fare. Buffalo and Rhino can be arranged. All hunting areas are exclusively controlled. Of special note is that they have some unique species available including Scimitar Horned Oryx, Bontebok, Cape Grysbok, Suni, Red Lechwe and Tssessebee. Many of these concessions exceed 60,000 acres in size, and a very real effort is made to insure your safari is a deluxe experience. They utilize good vehicles such as the Toyota Landcruiser. They hunt the Northern Cape, Transvaal, Natal and the East Cape.

The Northern Cape hunts are on a total of 150,000 acres. The Northern Cape generally tends to have excellent eland, gemsbuck, hartebeest and black wildebeest, and some very good impala. There are also good herds of roan and sable in the bushveld. This is a malaria free area.

The Transvaal (currently known as Mpumalanga), is also malaria free. Here there is a beautiful lodge on 25,000 acres, but over 100,000 acres are hunted. There are excellent kudu, waterbuck, warthog, eland and blue wildebeest.

The Natal Area is known for its Nyala, suni, red duicker, common reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, burchells zebra and more. If you want a big Nyala, this is the place. Here the climate is more tropical and the habit is denser. We recommend taking a malaria prophylaxis before you leave home. The lodge here is excellent and you sleep in comfortable rondavels with your own bathrooms. The area exceeds 20,000 acres.

The East Cape Area  is known for its vaal rhebuck, bontebok, white and black springbuck and lechwe. The country here is hilly to mountainous. The lodge here is a nicely converted old farmhouse, turned into your lodge. The hunting area here exceeds 150,000 acres.

DAILY RATES: Observers cost $150/person/day.  The daily rate varies with the area:
