                                   NAMIBIA:

Return to Africa

FOREWORD:

Namibia is presently considered a highly desirable country to hunt and to visit. It is an independent republic that has a very stable democratic government which elects a president by popular vote every 5 years. It was formerly known as German Southwest Africa. It is about ½ the size of Alaska, but with a climate that is desert like with sparse rainfall. Much of it is high plateau with the Namib Desert along the coastline and the famed Kalahari Desert to the east. Interestingly it was the first country in the World to incorporate protection of its environment into its own constitution! It is sparsely populated, with just less than 2 million people total. The primary spoken language is Afrikaans, but the official language is English. The capital is Windhoek. The country is divided into 13 regions, with the most famous being the Okavango. It is bordered on the North by Angola and Zambia, and on the east by Botswana and South Africa. Namibian  safaris can be found with very  reasonable pricing and very good success. Some spectacular trophies are taken here annually.  Many of the concessions are extremely large and offer excellent hunting. It also offers some very reasonably priced leopard hunts and produces some excellent kudu into the 50 to 60 inch class and superb gemsbuck into the 40 inch plus class. This is the gemsbucks original native homeland. Potential hunters should take note that in order to become a licensed PH, Namibia may well be among the very toughest of African countries to satisfy. Specifically, you must pass a very difficult examination to become a guide (not yet a professional hunter), and only after 4 years with at least 12 successful hunts, can you then apply for the Master Guide license. Then its another 2 years, and again another grueling exam and a practical, before you become a PH. Namibia is and will continue to be a premier safari destination. We have listed below those safari operators we prefer to work with.

 HUNT # 138:  NAMBIA

Butch's client Bill J with a big Kudu

This PH has his own 15,000-acre ranch near the famed Etosha Pan. He, together with a block of 28 other ranchers, have formed a conservancy, which all together comprises over 1/3rd of a million acres that he hunts. If that is not enough ground for you, he has perhaps another 500,000 acres in addition to that!! Probably in all about a million acres. He tries to rotate it each year, to keep quality high. As of 2006, his last 50 hunters have taken 47 kudu exceeding 50 inches, with the best a whopping 62 inches!! Butch hunted here in June of 2006, taking a nice leopard, and having two of his clients also take leopards- going 3 for 3 in July, 2006! And 2 came in during daylight, proving how lightly hunted this area is!! The PH grew up in the area and of course knows it intimately, and understands and loves to hunt leopards! What makes his area so special is that much of it lies near to the Etosha Pan, which is a huge non-hunting Park of about 22,000 square kilometers! Within that park, lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants are free roaming. They frequently leave the Pan to prey upon crops and farm animals of the conservancy, thereby insuring good animal stocks that are regularly replenished.  This area is virtually all unsettled, and he will have good leopard hunting for the next 50 years!! There is also excellent plains game, and gemsbuck, kudu, eland, Hartmanns Mountain Zebra, hartebeest, klipspringer, Damara dikdik, warthog, baboon, hyena, giraffe, steenbok, genet cat and others are available. The daily rates and the packages include field transportation, lodging, meals, drinks, tracking, skinning and your guide. Please note the exceptionally reasonable daily rates and the rates for observers and children under 16 who hunt with a parent. His area is all-private hunting land located about a 4-hour drive from Windhoek. Any trip here should also include extra time to visit Etosha National Park and the cheetah camp. One of our 2003 clients said to Butch that we should send every one of our clients there!  He said it was his best experience ever. Already Butch has clients booking into 2007 for their third hunt here!!!
