CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (CAR)
FOREWORD: The CAR had its government overthrown in 2003 by the rebel General, Francois Bozize. Bozize in the past has blocked roads and forced air evacuations of hunters. This situation remains very fluid, and we are encouraging anyone interested in hunting this country to contact us before scheduling a safari. We are guardedly optimistic that safaris will continue, but you must use care. In terms of the country itself, the CAR is located at almost the exact geographical center of Africa. It is bordered on the North and East by Chad and the Sudan; to the South by the Republic of the Congo, and on the West by Cameroon. This former French Colony became the CAR in 1960 when it gained its independence from France. The next 30 years were tumultuous under a series of military leaders. A civilian Government was installed in 1993. It was until just recently, a republic with popular elections for the President and Assembly. It remains to be seen what will happen under General Bozize. In terms of size, it is a little smaller than Texas with a tropical climate that features hot dry winters, and mild to hot wet summers. Its terrain is that of one vast plateau, with modest elevations and featuring some mountains in the Northeast and Southwest. Poaching here has been a problem, as it is in much of rural Africa. There are at least 8 tribal dialects and the official language is French, as is the legal system The capital is Bangui. The currency is the XAF (African Franc) and it trades at around 750 XAF to the dollar. HUNTS: We are not listing any outfitters at this time, pending a resolution of the recent coup. We do not know what will be happening to the concessions of the government, and are monitoring the problems. We know of some good Safari operators in this country, but unfortunately cannot recommend hunting here at this moment. Please check with us as this situation may change quickly. |
