Return to Africa

FOREWORD:

The primary species that get hunters excited about this country are the Forest Buffalo, the Bongo, nine species of duiker, Forest Elephant and the Giant Forest hog. The country of Cameroon lies northerly and easterly of the Bight of Biafra. It is bounded westerly by Nigeria, Easterly by Chad and CAR, and southerly by the Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The climate varies from tropical along the coast to hot and semi-arid in the north. Terrain varies from the southwestern coastal plains to the center plateau to mountains in the west and plains in the south. This country is sometimes referred to in geological terms as being the hinge of Africa. It has numerous thermal springs and much volcanic activity. Indeed, the 12,000 foot high Mt. Cameroon is an active volcano. It has 24 major languages with English and French being the two official languages. About 20% of the country is Muslim and 40% Christian. In size the country is slightly larger than California. It is a republic with a multiparty system, however most power is in the hands of the President, President Biya. He has been in control since 1982, with some tumultuous elections with some people boycotting the elections due to their unfairness. The currency is the XAF (Communaute Finangere Africaine Franc). The exchange rate is around 700 XAF to the US dollar. Cameroon at present appears to be a safe destination with a reasonably stable government.

HUNT # 31: CAMEROON BONGO, SITATUNGA, LORD DERBY ELAND, DWARF BUFFALO AND MORE!

This PH’s outfit has in a fairly short time, become one of, if not THE most respected outfit in Cameroon. Craig Boddington, perhaps today’s leading expert on Africa, said this about his two safaris with this outfit:

“I have hunted in Africa something like 50 times, and you have one of the best outfits I have ever seen!”

Another name of fame, none other than Warren Parker, after two safaris with this outfit  announced he was going to write the hunt up and publish it in the SCI magazine, he was so pleased. This from a guy with nearly 400 species to his credit! Now folks, these guys have been most everywhere, have done most everything, and they each hunted twice with this outfitter!! Legendary success, quality PH’s and great hunting areas, and species including the bongo, the sitatunga, the giant Lord Derby Eland, Western Roan, Dwarf and Northwestern Buffalo- many of the rarer duikers- this is a great place to hunt. We are proud to be associated with them and we are confident you cannot find a better hunt in Cameroon!

This outfitter has two types of African hunts; and you choose to hunt either Forest or Savannah—or both! . Their first Savannah camp, is located between two National Parks: "Bouba Njida" and " La Benoue". Species here include the unique North Cameroon Derby Eland or the amazing Giant Topi.  You may see a herd of Elephants, Western Roans, Northwestern Buffalos, Hippos and even Lions. No-one has been more successful on Lord Derby eland!

They have four other Savannah camps offering you the same kind of spectacular hunts. One camp with   a variety of game is called "Mayo Nduell". In 2001, they started to operate in a third area named "Mayo Vaimba" characterized by being full of Eland in the early season. Another area:"Rey Bouba" savannah camp is about to be opened as a brand new hunting area with brand new accommodations.
In 2005 they added a fifth savannah camp called "Djibao" located at the Easter border of Bouba Ndjida National Park. A SCI record eland was taken in February 05! Plenty of quota normally, so book it now!

Because of all these various savannah camps they operate with nearly double the number of licenses over any other company. If you are interested,  we suggest that any Savannah Safari take place during the dry season, meaning, from Christmas to the end of May. Now lets look at their Forest hunts for bongo etc.

                                                         FOREST HUNTS

This outfitter in 2000 was able to acquire from the Cameroon Government, the virgin forest area called "The Boumba", noted for its large number of Bongo and for it’s high quality trophies, including the unique Forest Elephant. Importatntly, from our view as their US agent, "The Boumba" forest area accounts for 40%. of the total amount of licenses granted by the Cameroon Government to hunt dwarf buffalo and Forest Sitatunga! Because this area has been such an isolated and remote area, often requiring  a pirogue to go through, there is an abundant diversity of animals. Therefore, you can easily find all kinds of Duikers, Bates Pygmy Antelope, Bush Pig, and with a little bit of chance, even the Giant Forest Hog. In 2002 he acquired another forest area called "Lognia", located on the border of Cameroon with the Congo and R.C.A. and protected by the Lobeke National Park. This is a classic bongo hunting area consisting of forest crossed by old travel routes. Then to our delight, they added a third forest area called DJA, near DJA National Park, an area almost unseen and unhunted.  After exploring one part of the new area they pronounced it as excellent for sitatunga. Hunting there is really hard, and only for the truly adventurous. Then in  2005 they acquired a  fourth forest area called "Ndama", still being explored. They are virtually 100% successful on a 14 day hunt for Bongo!!

In our opinion, if you want a Forest Safari, best times are starting in mid March and going on until late July. During these months a three-hour-daily-rain wets the ground allowing hunters to follow the tracks quietly by avoiding  the dry leaves. Although it normally rains at night, you can expect rain anytime. .
Finally , for both kinds of safaris, forest and savannah, this outfitter guarantees you hunting opportunities to shoot the animals you would be interested in.

TRIP DETAILS:        HUNT #31   CAMEROON

Hunt in equatorial Africa, deep in the rain forests of Cameroon, often not far from the border of the Congo. Here you are visitor, a “Tall”, in the land of the Bake pygmies (pronounced Baa-kaa), the forest-dwelling natives that have lived much as they live now for the past 10,000 years!!!!!! Hunt a world totally different from where you may have hunted plains game, among arid plains and acacia trees. This is gorilla country, pygmy country; land of odd species and life forms much older than yourself! You will sweat, work hard and feel incredibly rewarded by your efforts and your trophy. Call us at 1-307-637-5495 to book.

2. OR take a Domestic flight from Douala/Yaounde to Garoua or to Ngaoundere a city about 230 Km from the camps, which means about a four hour driving trip to the Savannah camp you are assigned to. Aprox. fare: €300 round trip

TO GET TO THE FOREST CAMP:
1. Charter a flight: from Douala to Moloundou or Kika. Fare: €5,600 one way. Normally available seats: either fourteen seats and not luggage or ten seats with luggage .Often this  expense can be shared.
2. OR: About two days driving from Douala (but better Yaounde) to camp - car fare: €2,000 round trip.

ON A COMBINED SAFARI (FOREST AND SAVANNAH): Combined safari of forest and savannah, you could either:

  1. Charter a flight from/to Tchollire; from/to Moulundu or Kika for €7,500
  2. OR take a domestic flight and stay over night at Douala or Yaounde

- A host person will always assist clients on their arrivals/departures to any of the Cameroon airports (Douala, Yaounde, Garoua, Ngaoundere, Bertoua, Moloundou or Kika)

- If needed, domestics and charters flights can be reserved for you through the Safari company, but you should give us thirty days advance notice. The Safari company is not responsible for any flight cancellation or charter fare change.

- Charter flight cost could be shared with other hunters in order to reduce the cost. The Safari Company  will try to make  your arrival/departure date coincide with other peoples dates, so you could take the charter together and share the cost. But no promises on that. Some people like the overland route as they really get to see the country, plus it is much more economical.
